News: Transforming the Citroen C4

Advertisers are ripping a page from moviemakers' 3D playbook, using 3D rendering technologies to make eye-catching television commercials.

An example is the recent advertisement for the Citroen C4 (http://www.citroenc4.co.uk/, click "see the TV ad"). The dancing "transformer" car may look like the work of a really incredible robot, but it's actually a 3D model. Software lets the model exactly mimic a human dancer whose moves were captured with motion sensors. The background is a real location, filmed on the roof of a parking lot in downtown Vancouver.

Citroen is a French carmaker which does not sell vehicles in the United States. The advertisement was made for the European market.

Similar 3D animation techniques were used in the recent film The Polar Express, in which Tom Hanks' movements were captured for a variety of animated characters.
