When the Wii was first launched in 2006, there were many accounts of early adopters' elderly family members trying it out and having a blast. This isn't hype; our local newspaper blog points readers to some video from a local senior center showing a few players who look to be in their 70s or even older having fun with Wii Tennis and the Wii Fit. Here's the clip:
I got a Wii earlier this year, and it really is an inclusive system compared to the XBox, which was designed with hardcore gamers in mind -- usually young men who like first-person shooters. For most Wii games, there is no complicated UI to figure out -- players just wave their hands around to hit a ball or move. My young daughter liked it, my non-gamer wife liked it, and over the summer I had a group of friends over who wouldn't put it down. My parents sound interested, so the next time they're here, I'll show them how to play. Who knows? Maybe "Generation G" can expand to include older age groups.
